I saw you perform in Dingle last weekend. When you played "The Holy Ground", the entire pub fell silent. Beautiful song and excellent performance.

Dear Mr O`Beirne!
I love your "western highway". It is awesome and beautiful. Thank you

Gerry...saw you play at St. James during our stay in Dingle a few weeks ago. (We missed our Ghost tours of the graveyard you promised...LOL) I just had to get your cd. You brought me to tears then and I still well up hearing you play On Holy Ground. What a delightful surprise it was for us to hear you! Thank you so much! --Ruth, Kelly and Michelle

Dear Gerry O'B.,
Thank you so very much for coming to Bonny Doon in Caifornia back in April. I hope you will come back -- it was a joy.

Sending kind wishes and deep thanks for the music.
Irene
(Also, won't you please come back here to the site and write a bit more? Missing knowing what you are up to and the music and other adventures in your life.... )

Hi Gerry
Really enjoyed the chat on Friday night with Aoife. Alas we need to work on her life with Donegal men!!! The song you played for us was magnificent and, if your proposed tour brings you anywhere near me on the East Coast, I will try to pop along and see you.

Hi Gerry, we´ve seen you in John Benny´s on friday and saturday, and we really loved it. If you ever come to Germany let us know, otherwise we see you in dingle again. Your songs touched our hearts... Maybe you remember me telling you about the sittin room concerts, who knows...?

September 27, 2012

I had the pleasure of seeing Gerry play at John Benny’s 2 weeks ago in Dingle. I was so impressed with Gerry’s cord structures and how he played so “beautifully” and “sympathetically” with his fellow musicians and singers. My favorite songs of Gerry’s are, Shades of Gloria and The Holy Ground both of which bring tears to my eyes when I play them as they remind me of my week in Dingle and the days spent reading my James Connolly book on Coumeenole Beach (pure haven). God bless you Gerry hope I can catch up with you on my annual trip to Dingle next year – Keep up the good work and good luck to you!

We had the great fortune to be in Dingle two weeks ago and enjoyed your talent very much. The slide numbers total blew me away - Brilliant! I want to order the CD with a particular cut on it, and I think it is Angel, Angel. Is that the one where your playing so fast and hard it looks like you have ten fingers? I swear it wasn't the Guiness! Thanks for a great weekend of music.

Just acquired Brongaene Griffin's 2010 recording Three Colours Ginger (Loftus Music), a delightful package produced and arranged by Gerry (with Brongaene) and also featuring him on guitar and ukelele in some of the finest accompaniment I've heard. I'll be studying these arrangements for some time, so tasteful, varied and always interesting -- the term "rhythm guitar" doesn't begin to do it justice. Now I'm off to get a hold of more of Gerry's recordings. Thanks for the inspiration.

There's a wonderful recording of Gerry's performance at the Dingle Record Shop:

Hi Gerry I guess all the practice in Ena's kitchen paid off, the guitar sounds beautiful. Just bought Ena one of your CDs, she'll get a kick out of it when it arrives. Also I'm totally jealous of your dobro, would love one but have yet to find my dusty back street with one for sale. All the best Jamie.

We miss you at the farm, Gerry! I hope Rosie can join you next time. We have a new studio in the works. I am working with my dad on the Beirne history he remembers since his grandmother's sisters arrived in the USA, but we don't have much prior to that except for the original manuscript and typescript of "Recollections of a Western Ranchman" where my great-grandfather goes over a great deal that was subsequently edited out of the final draft! Hope to see you soon. Love to you both, Laura

So glad you have another CD (just ordered mine) as I think I've played Half Moon Bay so often I just may wear it out. Hope to see you touring in the Northeast US sometime soon. Saw you in Bethlehem PA and Elmer NJ some years ago with Andy and enjoyed both performances so very much. Thanks for an opportunity to tell you how much I have enjoyed your music over the years.

Such a pleasure to meet and to listen to you on Tuesday in Great Bend. (I hope I didn't offend you with my harping on Irishness - I'm afraid I'm a great chain-yanker from way back.) JF has kindly loaned me Bog Bodies to enjoy for a bit. When I can save some non-essentials funds, I will gleefully buy my own. You wear your heart on your strings - or your fingers? - and it's an honor to have had the opportunity to hear its songs. Thank you. Would love to have a multi-cultural conversation some time...

April 7, 2009

Hi, Gerry!
I thought that since mom was signing your guestbook, that I should too! I have to agree with her about the white filly! She is beautiful! I thought that all she needed to look like a unicorn was a horn. I can't get over your photography. You're an artist in more then one sense.
You are full of light, and in turn, your music also. It lifts the spirit. when I listen to your music, I can hear the story, see it with my hears, you might say. I'd love to sing with you! I would be worried about messing up thou. *sigh* Anyway, I'd LOVE to visit you were you live. You've been here, our turn! *smiles*
Affectionately yours,
Xochitl

April 6, 2009

Hi, Gerry,
I decided it was high time to visit your web site. Lovely photos! I am a horse lover -- and amateur fine arts photographer among other things -- and instantly fell in love with the white filly. She is gorgeous, as are your photos of her.
Xochitl and I saw the photo of your guitar. Her comment was, "It's just SAD! The whole side is [let me see if I can spell this right] SMOOSHED." I am sure you can picture her expression to capture the sense of it. I hope you will post the verdict from Southwest and provide updates on the patient as she undergoes surgery, so to speak. (And I thought my violin looked bad before it spent 4 years 'in hospital'.)
I have a confession to make. I did not do my research on you adequately before the concert last night concert here in Columbia, Missouri, so I did not put two and two together about how much production work you have done. All these years of enjoying Up Close and Promenade and never the wiser! I will have to look for Rosie Shipley's album when it comes out.
I do hope you look up Jim Scott. His web site really is jimscottmusic.com as I wrote on the card.
Although it may be a while before you return to Missouri, next I see Allen Tatman later this month I will ask him to be on the lookout for you. You can check out the web site for Paddy Malone's Pub in Jefferson City, Missouri at paddymalonespub.com.
Thanks again for visiting us in Columbia last night. Hope your concert in Great Bend, Kansas goes well, and likewise your production time in New Orleans with Rosie. May our paths cross again soon.

All the best,

Jackie Ambrow

we actually met and talked a few years past(about 12 string guitar lessons) at the celtic festival at the oatlands in virginia. not like you would remember, except for the fact that it was hot as hades - 98F if i remember right, and humid as all get out - but you were fabulous. i intend to make a trip to ireland this fall(2009) - and would like to know if you have any dates scheduled then, and if you don't, i would like to know where to go to hear good - not commercial - but good and real music. hey, if you have any seriously passionate advice of what i need to see when i am there, that would be great too.thanks. deepest respect for your talent, your haunting melodies and words. when you sing, i see the places you see. that's art.

Snatches of the holy ground song have been in my head for 20 years.Whenever I searched for it I ended up in Jerusalem not Mexico. An accident found me here, when i was looking for Jerusalem and not Mexico. I feel like I have found something precious that was lost to me.

December 21, 2008

Gerry,
I remember you standing by the side of the road in Fort Bragg. Leaving town and wearing Juarez's big leather hat. Juarez is still with us, though at 85, his parts are wearing out.

I was intrigued by the photo of the sharecropper's house in Crocket, Tx. My father, his father, and his father before him, were born in San Saba Texas, also in the Hill Country but considerably west of Crocket. That great-grand-father was named David Crocket Hubbert..... My father was born in a house that looked much the same as that sharecropper's house. I've got an old photo of that house.

I'm in Boonville making pipes and raising my family. Life is good.

Would love to see you again. I'll be in Europe for a couple of months next fall. Perhaps........

Hello, Sir! How I enjoyed my evening of last....(the house concert of nov20th) in MY mind, I am musing pianos up two flights of stairs, as well as cool weather Irishmen trekking upon hot Mexican deserts of long ago...not to mention those who would steal panes of glass, --you stole my musical heart, last night--all smiles and joy lingers on---you share what the world needs now--blessing upon you, troubadour! We all enjoyed last night's concert so much! Your songs and guitar playing really made the night for us ~ and Andy was funny and a great storyteller. It was sort of special for us to be able to go with our kids and friends and hear how much they liked it. Ryen plays guitar and keyboard and he especially appreciated your part of the show. My favorites were It Takes a Lot to Laugh.....on ukelele ~ and the instrumental from The Bog People (just kidding!) Bog Bodies... glad I now have the cd so I can hear more.

You could've played 10 more songs and it still wouldn't have been enough! Let us know when you'll be here again, and we'll be there!

Hi Gerry,

First off, fantastic site you have here! I (very) recently saw you and Andy M. Stewart play at the Austin Celtic Festival, and all I can coherently say is 'wow'.

I'd seen both of you before: you at Austin's 2005 festival, and the pair of you at Austin's St. Patrick's Day Street-Fest. I think I can truly say I'm addicted now to your live performances. A more dynamic duo I've yet to hear!

I hope to see you again soon!
Take care and all the best,
Katrina

Gerry,
We happened to catch the folk concert @ the St. James Church in Dingle on Monday, September 8th. It was our first trip to Ireland and we fell in love with the town. We live in Brooklyn, New York and want to make sure we see you in the states if you're touring in the northeast. Thank you for a beautiful show. We bought "Half Moon Bay" the next afternoon at a great record shop in Dingle and it became the soundtrack for the rest of our trip through the west and back to Dublin. Please add us to your mailing list as we would love to see you play again.
Best,

Dear Mr O'Beirne,
Unfortunately I was too timid the other day to walk up to you and give you some praise for your beautiful music. Now I send you my praise in writing instead. I saw you perform in St. James church here in Dingle two times now and I was enchanted by your music and your performance. I instantly fell in love with the Leprechaun-song and with Long Beating Wing.
Thank you for the music!
Sincerely yours,

I saw you in Pittsburgh this pas winter, and was lucky enough to flirt with you during the intermission! I'm using one of your songs ("Dancing Sweeny") on a mock website. Don't worry -- the site isn't being published online -- just being constructed in a web development class. Our assignment was to use "dynamic html" to build a site for our own radio station. So... if I could really have my own radio station, and play what I really want to, I would play your music all the time! In the meantime, I must be content with listening to it on my iPod, which is just as good, if not better!!

Can't wait until you come along to Pittsburgh for a concert, again!

HI Gerry, I came to your music through listening to Maura O Connell recently. Your Celtic soul is evident and made me homesick, in a good way! I am looking forward to performing some of your music with my band in the near future.

Thanks for one of the most beautiful evenings of music I have ever experienced. You turn the guitar into a constellation and the ukulele into a prism. I had thought I was unfamiliar with your music until you played "Western Highway," then I realized that many of your songs have been rendered by other artists. Especially love the song to your muse, "Long Beating Wing." Both CDs will be played until they're bald. Thanks so much.

February 25, 2008

Gerry I loved your set at Stony Brook, Rosie was superb as well. I've read Doris Lessing's Marriage s Between Zones 3, 4 and 5, and would like to read the lyrics to the song it inspired.

Reminding you about my new verse to Dylan's It Takes A Lot To Laugh... see & hear it on my MySpace,

I appreciated your page on tunings. I do a few tunes in alternate tunings but lately my fancy has been tickled by partial capos.

Hope to catch you again soon.
Thanks.

My wife, two daughtes and I saw you and Rosie this evening. It was the first time we'd heard of you, or your music (sure glad San Marcos
Library hosted you and Rosie).

Was amazed by your mastery of the 12 string -- it was lyrical. Yes, it is a shame more people don't play it (then again, so few play it well; so maybe it isn't a bad thing after all).

Your style is so unique, felt like I was listening to a jazz musician playing folk. . .scales of chords instead of individua notes. . .clear as bells -- and on a 12 string no less. BRAVO! And your elephant is pretty awesome also.

Just got home, put your CD on -- Rosie's too -- to get a feel for what was on them. Look forward to listening to it tomorrow.

Thanks again for a wonderful evening of music.

October 19, 2007

Hi Gerry,
I've been a fan of your songwriting since Maura O'Connell recorded "Half Moon Bay" back in 1995 (still my favorite recording of hers). Stumbled upon a copy of your own "Half Moon Bay" recording about a month ago, and must admit it makes me pine to be in the Irish hillsides, even though I've never visitied there. How lucky that you're coming to North Carolina in November. We just left a message at the "house concert" in Raleigh (closer to us) but if that doesn't work out we will come to the Winston-Salem show. Thank you for sharing your beautiful songs. Most sincerely, Darren Stuart

I heard you on XM radio yesterday. I enjoyed your mention of Radio Luxembourg. My Irish friends tell stories of listening to classic rock on this station when they were teens. We spent time streaming music from our youth on their web site. And like you, I went to bed in Chicago with the transistor radio under my pillow. We grew up seperated by an ocean, but with a shared love of music.

Gerry,
My sister and I loved your concert at Beans in the Belfry in Virginia. That was one of the best days of my life. You spoke with us warmly, and my sister gave you her door prize. We thought you were brilliantly, spontaneously hilarious. I listen to your CD almost all the time, and it's so exquisite that most other music pales beside it. You have the sweetest voice, and I've never heard such beautiful guitar playing with so much heart.

Saw you with Thom moore in the Cherrytree last night. Very enjoyable gig. Paticularly enjoyed the "two twelve-strings"

I have just had a look at your photos. some very good quirky images.I went to New Orleans with my family last July 2006. A sad place after Katrina, but hopefully the spirit still lives. All the best

Hi Gerry...We met in Berkeley many years ago when you played there with Andy Stewart. I gave you a lift, and gave you the piece I wrote about my grandfather. Been listening to Half Moon Bay, and thought I would check up on your site to see if you've recorded a new album yet. Your photographs are truly wonderful. Hope to see/hear you near Redding, CA someday!
